Hey all-
This past weekend, Porter Hammer gave a slideshow (courtesy of Matt Perkins) at the 2005 Rockfest in Leavenworth.
Although he wasn't too keen on being a public speaker, he did an admirable job. The slide-show emphasized the impact that the WCC has had in its short existence (contributions towards the purchase of Sam Hill, convincing the FS to open the road to Darrington). Immediately prior to Porter's presentation, a local climber gave a slideshow on new areas in Eastern WA that have been seeing some routes go up in recent years. In addition to the Eastern WA slideshow, there were lots of rumors and questions about a couple new 'secret crags' that have been seeing some development. In other words, people were ready to talk about accesss issues at Rockfest, and Porter had a receptive audience.
At the end of the evening, the Rockfest organizers (Marshall Balick) had raised about $1k through raffle tickets for 'a charity of the crowds' choice." Several possible recipients were suggested, including the Access Fund, the No-DUSEL fund, the WCC, and tsunami relief in SE Asia. The crowd voted to give the money entirely to the WCC! Pretty cool stuff.
Thanks to Matt for putting together a great presentation, and thanks to Porter for being the one to sack up and speak in front of the crowd.
